The Future Is Always Emerging
We can fool ourselves into thinking the “future” is ahead of us…but it’s always, persistently emerging. In every thing we do, each decision we make, all the ways we show up, we are shaping what happens next.

I’ve seen some seeds germinate while still dangling from the previous year’s blossoms, but robust growth can’t take off unless the seed actually hits the ground. In the midst of all the recent disruptions, with the accompanying uncertainty and fear, ideas for building and strengthening community are racing through my mind. Good to remember that to make an actual difference, they “gotta hit the ground.”
We are works in progress. Sometimes we are like a green tomato…sour, hard, unpleasant. And yet, we can sweeten with time. Here’s to taking that important pause while I working on ripening. Sigh.
This blossom is in its last stages, and yet as its petals turn translucent in the rain and ultimately fall to the ground, they are visible signs of a most beautiful process. I’m wondering how this shows up in our day to lives without notice, and if noticing might be an exercise in mental health?
Change can be so disorienting, and yet it’s everywhere. Time to consider what the next phase makes possible.
About three weeks ago, I captured this image. It was in between the “atmospheric rivers” we’ve been experiencing here in the PNW. Everything since that day has been a blur, up to and including yesterday. Moments dissolve, one into another, bringing to mind the word “ephemeral.” Of course, you might say, “lasting for a very short time” also describes the word “moment.” Hey, maybe I’m working on expanding my vocabulary as well as my photography skills! Anyway, Christmas, just like this mushroom, is now behind us with the upside that both have made way for what comes next. Here’s to that.
While I work on a Farm, and love the way fresh, ripe fruits and vegetables look, in the Fall I am especially drawn to the intricate folds and gradations of color that seem to shout that the dance is not yet over! Yet another reminder to me to slow down and pay attention to the infinite number of ways beauty shows up in the world.
After an intense summer, the rains bring relief and a transition to quieter times at the Farm.
It’s been an extremely full week, and I wanted to spend a little time outside while the rains have taken a break. I found myself wandering down around Holmes Harbor and noticed the sail-like texture of the structure that covers boats as they are created and/or repaired at Nichols Brothers Boatyard. Peaking through the wooden fence, I found the colors, patterns, and functionality all to be so beautiful and somehow soothing.
